Types of Kitchen Sink Materials

In total there are five major, or most popular at least, material choices when you purchase a brand new kitchen sink. To help you decide, here we will take a look at the pros and cons of each. It is important of course that you consider the style and the function of your new kitchen sink, and that you set yourself a tight budget to stick to. Kitchen sinks make quite the style statement in the room, and here are the best materials that you could opt for.

 Stainless Steel Sinks

Stainless steel kitchen sinks are undoubtedly the most commonly purchased sink material. The reason behind this is that they are low cost, they are incredibly flexible regarding the size they can be made in, and they are also very hygienic. With good maintenance, these sinks are long-lasting and robust. The only potential downside of this sink option is that they can scratch, and to some they are not the most aesthetically pleasing.

 Composite Sinks

Composite sinks are often preferred as they come in a wide range of colors and they are incredibly durable – much like stainless steel. Composite sinks can be considered as even more durable than stainless steel, however, as they are resistant to chips, scratches, and dents. For this reason, they do cost a little more than stainless steel.

Ceramic Sinks

Whilst ceramic sinks are used more often in the bathroom, they are also a popular option for the kitchen. Ceramic kitchen sinks are made using clay, water, and powder, which are then heated at extremely high temperatures. The result of this process is beautiful-looking and very durable sinks. Ceramic sinks do have the capability to shatter if they are hit hard with something heavy, although this is improbable. Ceramic is scratch-resistant, very easy to maintain, and also hygenic.

 Cast Iron Sinks

Another durable material for your kitchen sink is cast iron. Owing to its heavy foundation it can really be put through its paces and still remain looking its best. Cast iron is glossed with high-quality enamel, providing a classic look in your kitchen.

 Copper Sinks

Copper kitchen sinks are one of the most expensive materials that you could choose, yet you get so much in return for your expenditure. The first point to make here is that copper sinks look absolutely beautiful and provide a real style statement for your kitchen. Secondly, this is one of the most hygienic materials out there,  not to mention that copper is easy to maintain and very long-lasting. This is well worth the investment.

 Natural Stone Sinks

If you really want to push the boat out and buy a sink of real beauty then look no further than natural stone. Generally, this is a material that is more befitting of a bathroom, yet many have been able to incorporate such material in their kitchen. This is a pricey option and whilst it does look great, it can provide you with issues around functionality and maintenance. Natural stone is, of course, porous which means you need to clean it well on a regular basis. Damage won’t be an issue here but discoloration and hygiene issues will be.
